'Tainted' judge takes over Guj riot probe, sparks row

Meghdoot Sharon, CNN-IBN

Ahmedabad: Can a judge against whom allegations have been made of releasing riot accused on bail be entrusted with the task of finding facts of the communal riots of 2002 in Gujarat?

The Narendra Modi government has done exactly that in appointing a replacement of Justice K G Shah, who passed away a few days ago.

Jansangharsh Manch, fighting the cause of the riot victims in the commission, says they'd boycott the commission.

Interestingly, the Tehelka tapes have been made part of record of the Commission.

Mukul Sinha of the Jansangharsh Manch says, "My question is this: Should the man against whom allegations have been made be a judge in his own case? That's why we are objection and we have decided not to participate. We won't participate."

NGOs like the CJP - for long demanding a CBI probe - says this is plain fascism

"I think it's a question the entire system needs to answer. The apex court needs to answer. If the state government appoints a man who has been tainted and accused of letting off criminals. How will victims of Gulbarg, Naroda, Ode, Sardarpura ever get justice ?" Says Secretary of Citizens for Justice and Peace, Teesta Setalvad.

This is not the first time Narendra Modi has been accused to playing a partisan role. Earlier, the appointment DGP PC Pande cause quite a controversy. The CM was also charged with tainted politicians and policemen.

Is the Narendra Modi government earnest enough in bringing out the truth of Godhra and the post Godhra riots through the Commission findings ? Whispers of suspicion are now turning into cries of foul play.
