Political games that taint the Taj

Agra: The Taj Mahal looms over the city of Agra and protecting it has led to the closure of all sorts of industries.

While the only real industry left in this city is tourism, the attack on tourists in Agra has sent shock waves through the city.

At a hastily called meeting of various hospitality industry associations, the outrage was evident.

"People sitting in Delhi are asking whether it’s safe to come to Agra or not,” said President of the Tour Guide Association, Shamshuddin.

Infact, the reliance on tourism as a sustainer has led people to see through political posturing, and call a spade a spade.

“This was an attempt by political parties to get the Muslim votebank. I request all Muslims to not fall into their trap,” said President, Taj Mahal, Syed Munawer Ali.

With the real possibility of the tourist season being cut short by an increasingly violent campaign season, the message was couched in a language that politicians facing elections would understand.

“We will not vote for any political party that is not able to control their members,” said Rajeev Tiwari from the local traders association.

But it remains to be seen whether this stand can actually change politics as usual.
