Chennai: Top Tamil actresses and social activists – Revathi, Suhasini and Rohini along with actor Prakash Raj raised a few questions at the Sathyam Cinemas recently: Why does Kollywood not have more women film directors?
They also asked why are there no women-centric scripts and what does it take to be a woman technician in a male-dominated industry?
While we weren't privy to their answers, the ladies shared their experiences as Kollywood actors.
"When we came here, we were totally blank. But then things looked good and I got a national award. I think it's time to share our wisdom,” says Suhasini.
Rohini says that it’s been good experience to work as an actor.
“It's a lovely experience to know that you're respected and celebrated,” says Rohini.
“I think Prakash was really good in the way he questioned the importance of women in the Tamil film industry. There were quite a few things I'd never thought about,” confesses Revathi.
But when it comes to women-centric roles, Rohini feels that Kollywood still has a long way to go.
“In the West if you see, even actor Meryl Streep gets to play such good roles. But here, after you're married, you are not seen as a person who can do lead roles,” says Rohini.
However, Rohini adds, “When we have our scripts, we'll have more roles for middle-aged women.”
