Chennai: A court order to shut down a school has sparked angry protests from students and their parents. The school is being forced down shutters because the landowner wants to sell the land.
“I don’t know how the teachers will be in the new school and whether I will be able to cope and adjust to the new school,” says an agitating student Srinath.
The Adarsh Vidyalaya school at T Nagar was running on land leased out by actress Manorama 35 years ago. But after losing a court battle to the actress, the authorities decided to shut it down by year end. Parents are now blaming the school management.
“The management assured us that the school will not be shut down. But they didn’t take any legal action nor did they buy the land at that time,” says President, Parents Teachers Association, M V Arulalan.
But the school principal Venkatachala Pandian has gone on a defensive. “We can’t blame the management . The landowner earlier said that she would sell the land, but is now not agreeing. We are also now looking for some other land to buy, but are unable to find anything in this area,” he says.
The parents have filed a petition in court and hope the government will intervene to resolve the issue.
