Chennai: A movie on cricket is perhaps the next best thing to the game of cricket itself. And for the first time in Tamil, here's a movie that brings you the spirit of the game.
Directed by Venkat Prabhu, Chennai-600028, is not about the World Cup or professional cricket, but about Chennai’s famous tennis ball version of the game where different areas of the city compete for glory.
"This is not about the cricket ball cricket, where a guy is going to go into the Indian cricket team, going to Ranji trophy team, nothing like that. Its just about street level cricket where people just want their area to win,” says Prabhu.
The producer of the film, S P B Charan adds, “Cricket is what goes on in the whole of the nation. So we thought we'll make a fun story about a bunch of boys, and their life is cricket.”
But even though the film is not about the Sachins and the Sehwags, it’s still got a lot of cricket to boast of.
"It's an anthem for the World Cup from the street cricket players and lovers and everybody,” says Prabhu.
So the Tamil cinema's World Cup anthem hopes to make some box office collection from the cricket fever. The film will release in March, the apt time when the World Cup takes the cricket fever to an all-new high.
