New Delhi: Over 27 people were killed and at least five injured when a compound wall of a bar where they were drinking collapse in Tirupur, 60 km off Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district.

Police say the accident occurred when the wall adjoining a vacant plot collapsed over the makeshift building that was being used by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) to run a liquor shop-cum-bar.

The bodies of the dead were removed from the debris by Fire and Rescue Service personnel with the assistance of police and the public. The dead are yet to be identified, police said.

There were several people trapped inside the building at the time of the mishap and police fear casualties may increase.

Those injured in the mishap were rushed to the government hospital in Coimbatore.

PTI reports the 22-foot tall wall, dividing the bar run by state-owned TASMAC and a private company went weak under the impact of rains that lashed the area for nearly an hour, police said.
