Kolkata: The CPM dreads the possibility of Kolkata erupting again and that is why the demand of those who protested against controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen's writings were met.
Taslima was taken out of Kolkata, where she was declared unwanted by those opposed to her writing.
However, now, in the face of criticism, the CPM is doing a rethink and former West Bengal chief minister, Jyoti Basu has said that Taslima is welcome back in Kolkata if the Centre takes responsibility of her security.
Of course, Jyoti Basu has lost a lot of his clout in the party and his views are not always heeded by the Government.
At the last politburo meeting in Delhi, the party leaders were not quite positive about Taslima's chance of returning to Kolkata soon.
But Jyoti Basu's invitation is music to Taslima's ears.
''I am thankful for his greatness and concern and also saying
that I am welcome in Kolkata,'' Taslima said.
For Taslima Nasreen, it's been a winter of discontent in a safehouse in Delhi, where she is living under tight security for almost a month now.
After she was whisked away from Rajasthan House she has not been allowed to meet anyone. The Bangladesh author says she has only one dream — that of returning to her home in Kolkata.
