Taste Khushboo, the hot Tamil Idli

Kanchipuram: Tamil films have always been an inseparable part of the state's culture. But mouth-watering food items being named after film stars, is a little too much to gulp down.

Khushboo Idlis—a popular dish down south—was named after the Tamil actress Khushboo who once ruled the Tamil silver-screen. Once found at every street corner, the scrumptious dish has now almost faded into oblivion.

Idlis (round, white cakes made by pulses) resemble the plump, fair actress, says caterer Meenakshi, who's been supplying Khushboo Idlis in Kanchipuram for the past 8 years.

“Khushboo looks plump, and these Idlis are like her. They puff up well even with a little bit of flour,” she added.

Even the actress herself can't resist biting into one. "I don't even know why they call them Khushboo Idlis. It's probably because it's round, white and soft like me. They taste good-anyways," said Khushboo.

It’s not just her who has inspired some mouth-watering cuisine down south. Cool ‘Kalpana’ icecream and ‘Pokkiri chicken’ are named after the famous Films of Tamil star Asin. All these dishes are selling like hot cakes.

"The menu here is especially compiled. The dishes were Asin's favourites," Sethu Suresh F&B Executive of Hotel Raintree said.

Most of these dishes have nothing to do with the actors they are names after. But as far as these Idlis go-with a bit of Tomato chutney—it simply tastes delicious.
