Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee confirmed on Friday, that Tata Motors would make Bengal its manufacturing base for its proposed one-lakh car manufacturing unit.

Within a day of winning a historic mandate, Bhattacharjee has started lobbying for more investments in his state.

"West Bengal has been under active consideration. It is one of the states we have shortlisted for having an automobile industry. However final decisions are yet to be taken," said Ravi Kant, Managing Director, Tata Motors.

Nirupam Sen, Commerce and Industries Minister, confirmed that Tata Motors was indeed looking forward to establish its proposed one-lakh car manufacturing unit in the state.

"After visiting the sites, they have gone back, and they will take their decision whether they will locate their small car unit in West Bengal or not. We are expecting their response by next 10-15 days," said sen.

Though, country's top automobile firm Tata motors maintained that final decision on setting up a factory in Bengal is yet to be taken, Bhattacharjee said he was confident that Tata Motors would make the investment in the car plant soon.

"Discussions were going on at the official level about the investment. Now Ratan Tata wants to do it as early as possible," said Bhattacharjee.

The Tata group chairman had earlier said that his group should have invested more in Bengal.

Bhattacharjee's confidence probably stems from fact that Ratan Tata has sought an audience with him in five days.

Apparently, it seems that the announcement of the car plant in Bengal would coincide with MLAs oath taking which will take place by end of May.
