Mumbai: Tata's Nano has caught the fancy of Mumbai's auto-rickshaw owners. They want the RTO to issue permits allowing the use of the Nano for public transport.
The people's car could be manna from the heavens for auto-rickshaw owners in Mumbai. They are asking the RTO to issue permits allowing use of the Nano as a public transport vehicle.
The main reason is that the Nano is priced in the same range as an auto-rickshaw —making it a great option.
But that is not the only criteria, being a covered vehicle, the Nano offers better safety, and shelter from inclement weather.
And on the fuel-efficiency front, the nano gives 23-26 kilo metres per litre —along the lines of an auto itself.
President, Navi Mumbai Rickshaw Mahasangha, Kasam Mulani says, "We will be able to provide better services to customers, including shelter from the sun and rain, a proper auto meter."
Conformity to stricter emission norms and equal ease in parking also adds to the allure of using the Nano for public transport. The permits will also mean bigger earnings for auto owners.
With the Nano's ability to carry more passengers, auto-owners feel their daily income will rise significantly from the current 200-400 rupees. They may also get to charge more for the better facilities in a Nano.
Auto-rickshaw owner, Sunil Borde says, "The pay by the meter will increase. It will be better for both the customer and the auto driver."
But not everyone is kicked with the idea. Auto-rickshaw dealers worry that if Nano-permits may hit the sales of rickshaws — they already have to contend with the possibility of a fall in sales as auto-passengers choose to buy the car instead.
