Tata to roll out 2.5 lakh small cars, may bid for Land Rover

New Delhi: Tata Motors will roll out 2.50 lakh units from the small car project in 2008 and the production is likely to touch 3.50 lakh in the next few years.

"I hope that next year, the first year of its production, 2.50 lakh small cars will roll out of the Tata Motors project here and the figure will reach 3.50 lakh in the coming years," West Bengal Minister for Commerce and Industry Nirupam Sen said on Saturday.

Tata Motors is emerging as a keen buyer for Jaguar and Lad Rover—the two car-brand earmarked for disposal by American giant Ford.

Now that Mahindra & Mahindra has opted out of the race, Tata’s chances of floating a bid for the brands seem likely.

Mahindra Group feared the onset of new tighter European Union emission regulations due in 2012, noting that neither of the two brands had smaller fuel-efficient models in their product lines. Mahindra was also concerned about continued dependence on Ford for key vehicle components.

Tata Motors, however, "remains strongly committed to the deal and is expected to be among the three major contenders" in the bidding.

Tata's continued interest would be in keeping with the Tata conglomerate's growing appetite for overseas acquisitions. Earlier this year, Tata Steel bought Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus for 13.7 billion dollars, India's biggest-ever foreign takeover.
