Singur: Singur has been a flashpoint for India inc's battle to win the war against the politics of land acquisition. And the writing has been on the wall that the Tata’s want to drive the Nano out of the state. From Ratan Tata's open admission in early September to the company and its vendors shifting out crucial equipment. The indication is clear, Nano is moving out of Singur.
But its a battle that Tata motors it seems has finally walked away from - and many believe West Bengal’s loss will drive a dent into brand India’s investment friendly image as well.
"It is a state issue with national implication, they have to sort out things in a manner that foreign investments come in,” says chairwoman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi.
“I make the point, if Ratan Tata could not succeed in WB, how can an American company hope to succeed there. We only want that in WB a project is allowed to proceed and environment is conducive and business is encouraged,” says President, US-India business council, Ron Somers.
The Nano will move into its temporary home in Pantnagar in Uttrakhand, where 1,000 cars will rollout eventually.
But the Nano's final residence is still uncertain with sources saying that Haryana, Karnantaka and Mahrashtra are the front runners.
And even politicians who were earlier not positive about Tata’s coming to Singur have now changed their views
“If this project doesn’t go through, it will be a great tragedy for West Bengal because this is an opportunity for employment generation, this symbolises growth and it is the way forward not just for WB but for rest of India and even I don’t think that any situation should be created which destroys the kind of prospects that industry brings in,” says Union minister, Kapil Sibal.
The Singur’s tale began when on May 25 2006 angry farmers demonstrated against "forcible" acquisition of land for the Tata car project following Tata group chairman Ratan Tata’s announcement of small car project at Singur.
