New Delhi: In a major shift in Andhra Pradesh politics, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Thursday announced its support for a separate Telangana state.
The decision was taken by the party politburo on Thursday, which was chaired by party president N Chandrababu Naidu. The 15-member politburo unanimously passed a resolution putting its seal of approval for Telangana to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh.
TDP had been consistent in its opposition for a separate Telangana even when the Congress supported the separate state idea during the last Lok Sabha elections.
Following Congress' support for a separate state, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti fought the 2004 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with it in and swept the Telangana region.
But Congress stepped back later and the TRS quit the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and all its Members of Parliament resigned from the Lok Sabha.
Now TDP's decision is expected to realign the political forces in Andhra with TRS, in all probability joining hands with the Chandrababu Naidu-led party.
"We are not against Telangana state itself. We have constituted a core committee headed by senior members of the party and they have gone through the exercise. They have met everybody and taken all the feedback. Finally the core committee has recommended to the politburo for a separate Telangana," Naidu said in Hyderabad.
