Kendrapara (Orissa): Rajendra Das, whose only source of income is a roadside tea stall in Kolkata, is all smiles after his eldest son Deepak topped the state-level Medical Entrance Examination 2006.

His son, Deepak, has stood first among 22,339 candidates in this examination.

The news comes close on the heels of another tea vendor's son securing the 34 position in the Civil Service Examination.

Das, a resident of Baradia village in Kendrapara district, said his son would now be able to study in the prestigious S C B Medical College.

"I am very happy what I had dreamt of is going to become a reality. He is hardworking and has proved that hard work never goes unrewarded,"Das said.

"Deepak was hardly seven years old when I left for Kolkata to look for income to sustain my family. My wife had to look after Deepak and three other children," Das added.

Das said he used to send Rs 3,000 every month to his family of which a sizeable portion went towards Deepak's education.

"My son's potential was recognised by his teachers who advised me to admit him in SCS College, Puri for higher secondary studies," Das said adding that Deepak also scored over 80 per cent in his Board exams.
