New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh set the agenda for governance on Friday despite a very hectic sixteen-hour-a-day week.
He held several rounds of meetings with United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Congress President Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her key aide Ahmed Patel as they decided on portfolios.
Manmohan Singh started off the massive exercise of setting the governance agenda pushing for policy initiatives.
On Friday morning, Singh was at his residence 7 Race Course Road and called for important files and even had a crucial meeting with his Principal Secretary T K A Nair.
Singh has sent out a message loud and clear - perform or perish and that it's not going to be business as usual.
With the Prime Minister leading his team from the front several ministers took charge without wasting any time.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora after taking charge of his ministry said he would address the issue of the need to provide fuel and petrol at reasonable rate.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah rubbished rumours of him not being happy with his portfolio saying generating renewable energy was one of the biggest challenges one could face.
On taking charge of his office, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal announced his plans to make education accessible for all.
Newly appointed Commerce Minister Anand Sharma was confident that he would be able to deliver in his new role.
"It's a challenging responsibility. I will benefit from my experience in the External Affairs Ministry. Economic Diplomacy is a part of global engagements and I am prepared for interactions with world leaders," said Sharma.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, who took charge as Union Health Minister, pointed out his priorities saying, "My priority will be implement the National Rural Health Mission which was passed by the UPA Government in 2005-2006 and also to take before the Cabinet and get approved the National Urban Health Mission."
