New Delhi: 26/11 investigators are trying to tackle a new challenge in the investigation - the use of technology by the terrorists. If all the recent attacks and blasts terrorists used wi-fi, this time they have used a re-mailer.
Every e-mail has an Internet Protocol or IP address, which pinpoints the precise location it came from. But terrorists first replaced that address with a fake one using free software like these then used sites like fakesend.com to send it. The mail then pinged through the servers of many countries, including Russia, before reaching India.
News reports claim that the e-mail was not typed by hand instead the terrorists spoke while the software converted their speech into text. Others say Google Earth was used to reach the targets before the attack. Officially, Indian locations on Google cannot be that visible but free softwares can turn those hazy images into spectacular close-ups.
Once inside - the terrorists set up a communications room. They made conference calls over the web - those are hard to trace and block. That and live TV, helped them co-ordinate their attack.
When the power and TV were snapped - they tracked news from the web, on their phones. Satellite phones could also have got them fresh instructions from Pakistan.
