Panaji: Goa administration has ordered an investigation into an alleged case of sexual assault against Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal. The Goa police has asked the 5-star hotel where the Tehelka 'Think' festival was held to hand them the CCTV footage of the time when the incident took place.
Tarun Tejpal, had stepped down after allegations of sexual assault were made against him by a woman colleague. Tejpal stepped aside from his role for a period of six months on Wednesday.
Shoma Chaudhary, Managing Editor at Tehelka, will take charge in his absence. Sources say that the woman journalist had written a very detailed mail to Chaudhary reconstructing the alleged incidents.
According to sources the woman journalist demanded the setting up of an anti-sexual harassment cell as per the Vishakha guidelines at Tehelka to investigate the matter.
Tarun Tejpal, in an email to Shoma Chaudhary said, "A bad lapse of judgment, an awful misreading of the situation, have led to an unfortunate incident that is against all we believe in and fight for. I have already unconditionally apologised for my misconduct to the concerned journalist, but I feel impelled to atone further. I am therefore offering to recuse myself from the editorship of Tehelka, and from the Tehelka office, for the next six months."
Shoma had issued a statement in this regard saying, "There was an incident which has been dealt with internally. An unconditional apology was extended by Tarun. The journalist concerned was satisfied with the action taken. Tarun voluntarily recusing himself as editor is in keeping with the standards we have espoused as an institution and want to live by."
