New Delhi: The Telangana row hijacked the first day of the resumed Budget session of Parliament on Tuesday. In an unprecedented action, an angry Congress leadership suspended eight MPs from the region for four days for disrupting proceedings. The motion was carried by a voice vote after the members failed to go to their seats and continued to protest in the well of the house.
But the decision was a difficult one. Right from the time of the first adjournment itself at around 11 am, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee was livid as they were Congress's own members.
The government had the obligation of getting key bills passed. Its own members disrupting Parliament was getting more embarrassing.
There was some resistance from the BJP and SP as both were opposed to the idea of suspension of MPs.
But for those who faced the action, there was simply no other option left.
