New Delhi: The Department of Telecom plans to block all calls from Chinese made handsets in a move to seal security loopholes. Most of these handsets don’t have a unique International Mobile Equipment Identify or IMEI number, which identifies valid devices.
There are almost 1.6 crore Chinese handset owners in India, who were lusted for cutting edge tech in a cut price package.
“The Department of Telecom has made this move after security agencies found that mobile phones used by terrorists in the recent blasts did not have valid IMEI numbers,” says MD Nokia India Devinder Kishore.
The software from the net can easily change an IMEI number. For example, an IMEI number full of zeroes or with no zero at all – can easily be reprogrammed to show this number. Right now, the DOT order does not cover fake numbers with at least one zero in it. But experts say all these loopholes will very soon be ironed out.
