Telugu writer stunned as son is shot in US

New Delhi/Hyderabad: Allam Rajaiah is inconsolable. Family members and friends rushed in to console the noted Telugu writer as news spread on Friday night that his son Kiran Kumar Allam was among the two PhD students murdered at the Louisiana State University in US.

Allam’s friend and fellow student Chandrasekhar Reddy also was killed. Those close to the two men are stunned.

“We got to know when our daughter-in-law called. We are shocked,” said Allam’s uncle Narain Kumar.

Allam’s relatives have left for the US to get the slain student’s body back for the last rites. A US police task force is investigating the matter. University authorities expressed shock at the incident and say they have alerted other students and staff.

“Verification by our LSU emergency operation centre was made to all of the campus communities via broadcast emails, voice mails and text messaging. At this point, the investigation is till underway. There is no motive (sic). Preliminary investigations suggest it was a home invasion,” said LSU Chancellor, Sean O'Keefe.

The Indian Embassy has sent two officials to the university to help the police and authorities with the investigations.

An autopsy report to be released on Saturday may throw more light on the deaths.

The spokesperson of the Indian Students' association at the Louisiana State University, Sravanthi Karanam, said the University will remember the two students as calm and composed.

“They were very calm going and quiet and they were living their lives happily. I don't understand why someone did this. It’s very saddening because they were into their own lives. They were two doctorial students doing their PhD in Chemistry and Bioinformatics respectively and they were good. We are calling for a two-minute silence and a memorial service. The bodies have been taken for autopsy and will be back Sunday. So probably after Sunday, we will do a memorial service inside the LSU campus. They (police) said yesterday that there are three suspects but they are not sure who might be behind this,” Karanam said.
