Ten-day long festivities for Onam began in Kerala on Friday. It's a day of floral extravaganza across the state. Floral carpets called pookalams are laid out in courtyards of homes. A grand procession called Atha-chamyam is also taken out. Onam is celebrated every year to welcome Kerala's legendary king, Mahabali, who is said to visit his realm from the underworld. The state government has opened up 1,000 special outlets to meet increased demand for vegetables and provisions. The Tamil Nadu government has also declared Onam as a local holiday in Chennai.
