Srinagar: Two feet of snow with every step — that's what Indian soldiers in the higher reaches of Sabzian in Poonch have to trudge through everyday.
These forward posts near the Line of Control have received 20 to 25 feet of snowfall this year. But despite the hostile weather and the threat of avalanches, soldiers are not letting their guard down because infiltration attempts are still being made.
PRO Defence, SD Goswami says, "In the recent past, attempts to infiltrate have increased on South of Pir Panjal ranges and infiltration has been all along the traditional route."
Four attempts at infiltration have been made in Mendhar sector in Poonch this year.
On February 22, another attempt was made, and foiled, in the snowed-under Keran sector in Kupwara. The border fence has been submerged and damaged in some forward areas, but the Army says the snow has its advantages.
"It is difficult for anyone to make a movement unless they have a beaten track. In snow conditions it is easier for us to identify the track. We can also identify routes they are planning to take," says Major SM Kumar.
Many Army posts are snowed under, but the guard has not been not let down. Heavy snow also means that the traditional infiltration routes are blocked, but despite all attempts to push in terrorists, when snow melts infiltration is going to gather more pace.
