Terror stalks Mumbai, city on high alert

Mumbai: Hundred and eighty seven dead and over 800 injured – It’s this picture of tragedy that struck Mumbai in July last year.

A similar attack may well have been averted this time thanks to an alert taxi driver who tipped off the police on Tuesday night about three men. They along with a burqa clad woman took the taxi to several popular religious spots in the city including – the Mahim Dargah, Mahalakshmi Temple, the Haji Ali Shrine and the Siddhivinayak temple.

They even did a possible survey of the Mantralay behind the Hilton towers at Nariman Point. They paid the driver Rs 2,000 a day but as soon as the aged but alert driver sensed something out of place, he went on to tip off the police.

"He was an old Muslim gentleman who very courageously came to us. We cannot reveal more,” says Jt CP, L&O Mumbai Police, K L Prasad.

Convinced with the information, the police reacted and began a massive hunt by stopping taxis at checkposts heading towards the suburbs on Thursday evening. Five undercover teams are also now keeping watch on the suspected targets and the city is now on high alert.

But when covert operation was leaked to the Press, the cops had to go public.

"I appeal to the members of the public to help us in our operations and watch out for suspicious behaviour,” says Prasad.

And though the word is out and the threat may be very real searching for this possible sleeper cell may be difficult.
