Mumbai: When 27-year-old Satyajit Bhonsale joined the fire brigade two years ago it was just another job. But on 26/11 Bhonsale and his men dug deep to find the hero within them as they rescued scores of hostages stuck at the Taj hotel.
"There were bullets being fired, grenades being lobbed but when we saw innocent people trapped, we just started saving them," he says.
Mumbai's firemen were fighting not just the fires raging. They also risked being attacked by the terrorists even as they worked without protection.
A firefighter Prakash Raut says, "Our work is such that we get no protection, but when there is an order, we go and do our bit."
To its credit, the Mumbai fire brigade department reported just one minor injury during its marathon 60-hour firefight. The Municipal Corporation has awarded increments to all the firemen involved.
In gratitude for its rescue of foreign nationals, the German consulate too has felicitated the Mumbai fire brigade.
Germany's Deputy Consul General, Dr Martin Thuemmel said, "You people have shown a lot of courage and have helped German nationals too. I feel that you are the heroes of Mumbai."
During the three days of horror, Mumbai's firemen managed to rescue more than 700 people and also attended various smaller fire calls across the city and all this with remarkable efficiency.
