Ahmedabad: The Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad is home to some of Gujarat's dreaded criminals and terrorists.
But in this state, whose Chief Minister flaunts his handling of internal security, and blasts the Centre for being soft on terrorists, convicts are having a free run inside the jail.
A government affidavit filed recently reveals that one of the prisoners, Ghulam Mohammed, under detention for his suspected role in the Ahmedabad tiffin blasts and many other cases, had been using cellphones inside the prison.
Ghulam Mohammed made calls from five different cell phone numbers. He called two wanted criminals – Sharif Khan alias Chhota Dawood and Rasool Party, both in Pakistan. He also made calls to Saudi Arabia.
The police say they are treating this matter seriously.
“It’s a serious matter because he (Ghulam Mohammad) should not find any means of contacting anyone while he is in jail,” said DCP (Crime), Manoj Shashidhar.
For the Crime Branch, the challenge now is to find out if the suspects have planned any more terror strikes and whether any other inmate had access to mobile phones.
He has been very active in using the phone. At the most, he’s called up a couple of countries but he’s talked quite often. The numbers also kept on changing,” Shashidhar said.
A confidential report of the IG (Prisons) says that TVs, DVDs and some sharp-edged weapons have been smuggled into the Sabarmati Central jail in the past.
Clearly, this is not the first time security norms have been flouted at the jail.
