New Delhi: Long after Pakistani authorities declared the operation over for the terrorist attacks in the Pakistani Army Headquarters building in Rawalpindi on Saturday afternoon, reports say more than two terrorist are still present inside the building, holding at least 15 people hostage.
Security personnel have surrounded the area and trying are to get the hostages out with minimum loss.
On Saturday, shortly before noon eight men wearing military uniforms drove up to the gate of the army headquarter and opened fire at the building. They stormed inside throwing grenades and firing automatic weapons.
Four terrorists were shot dead by guards near the gate but the others were able to penetrate the walled compound.
It appears that the terrorists attacked the headquarters for the fact that army Chief General Pervez Kayani was present inside the building.
Army commandos moved in quickly blocking off any further advance by the militants. two were killed and last reports indicate two others were taken alive. Gunshots continued to be heard from within headquarters building.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban of Hakimullah Mehsud has claimed responsibility for the attack, a claim confirmed by the army.
The incidence comes ahead of reports that an army offensive against Mehsud's fighters in South Waziristan was imminent.
The audacity of the attack has shocked the army but may not have been unexpected. The greater danger is how the army rank and file will react as the offensive against allies turned enemies gathers force.
