Terrorists familiar with the hotel setup: NSG

VK Shashikumar, CNN-IBN

Mumbai: Kudos have been pouring in for the elite national security guard (NSG) commandos that spearheaded the operations against the terror attack in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Their information could prove crucial in the investigations.

In an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN, JK Dutt, Director General (DG) of the NSG said the terrorists were well trained and had a thorough knowledge of the targets.

The Director General of the NSG says the terrorists had complete knowledge of the buildings, and kept exploding grenades to cause maximum damage, whenever they felt threatened.

Our senior editor V K Shashikumar talked to the NSG DG.

JK Dutt: These terrorist were well trained which was not expected. They were physically fit which was probably also was not expected. They also had very good knowledge of tactics which we have seen for the first time over here. They were changing their strategies. So the result was that our officers on the job had to take extra initiative and also changed their tactics on the spot.

When we found that it was taking time when there was a lot of resistance from the terrorists, then our operation also intensified.

In this intensification of operations since yesterday, we lost one of our majors. It was on a staircase.

The Taj is a heritage hotel. There are huge landing. It was built in the times when there used to be thick columns to support the super structure. They were made with landing which were wide and huge. There were room which have high and number of doors. There are all sorts of corridors leading form kitchen to service room from one place to the other.

There are also suites in between. So taking this into consideration, it seems the terrorist knew about all these things. Where there is danger to life, it is very difficult to say which operation is more dangerous than the other.

At all these places anything could have happened. The longest of the operation was at the Taj and there are reasons for that. If the time taken at Oberoi was slightly less, there are reasons for that but this anyway does not reduce the gravity of the conditions under which the officers had to carry on the operation. The terrorists were very familiar with the hotel setup.
