Mumbai: The days of royalty are over, but thrones continue to make headlines. A public backlash has forced the Shirdi Saibaba Trust to scrap its plan to build a golden throne for the spiritual guru.

Among its critics was Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, who wrote an article opposing the move in the party mouthpiece, Samna.

But what goes around, comes around. A Marathi newspaper was quick to point out that the leader opposing the gold throne sits on a silver one himself.

In fact, Lokmat carried a picture of him sitting on a silver throne at a Sena convention at Shirdi in 2002 to show the "incongruity" of his stand.

"We received a few feedback from some follower's of Shirdi Sai Baba asking how can Balasaheb himself sit on a throne. So we published it," says Executive Editor, Lokmat, Vivek Girdhari.

Caught in his own trap, Sena supremo was quick to save face. He has now sent a similar throne given to him by his party to the daily's office.

The city office of the daily Lokmat at Chinchpokli in central Mumbai received Thackeray's throne at 1400 hrs (IST) on Saturday.
