Thai prisoners train for Olympics 2010

New Delhi: For most inmates crammed into Thailand's notoriously brutal jails, dreams of fame, fortune and early freedom are unattainable. But for the drug dealers, robbers and murderers who take up boxing at Bangkok's Ton-boo-ree Prison, that dream could become a reality, if they have what it takes to be an Olympic athlete.

The inmates at this prison get special treatment and are allowed to train but there's a catch: only a few will win a spot on Thailand's national boxing team and escape these concrete walls and the best one might get a chance to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Twenty-five-year-old Longsan Kamsiensuk - an inmate who is a boxer says, "I want to go to the Olympics like the gold medal winner Somjit."

Adds 28-year-old Teerayuth Wanaprasit, another boxer, "I am confident. This is a good chance for me. I will try as hard as I can."

The training to become a fighter is a long and arduous process. It starts at 5:30 am and continues through the day with stern prison guards watching their every move. So much so that their trainer, too, is not very forgiving.

Prison officer and inmate trainer, Juan Posuwan says, "They need to practice harder. Their basic skill and tactics for fighting are not that good. We need to train them."

This is the inspiration that is on a banner with the picture of the inmates hero which hangs from the prison's walls. It says " Superstars for the 2012 London Olympics. Need we say more?
