Click to play videoMumbai: Among the films that already made an impression at the ongoing International Film Festival of India in Goa, is Thanks Maa a realistic tale about children abandoned by their parents.
The fact that almost 270 children are abandoned everyday moved debutant filmmaker Irfan Kamal to take on this project which revolves around a 12-year-old boy named Municipality Ghatkopar who while on the run from a reformatory finds a two-day old child abandoned baby.
He takes the responsibility of finding that child's mother with help from friends four of the five children who play major roles in the film happen to be real street children from Mumbai.
"There were lots of challenges. The major thing was getting the star cast because I needed it to be very authentic. So we decided to get street kids, finding them was one big task and getting them together making them work as half of them probably wouldn’t read and write, and people used to come for training sessions, they used to come and disappear. Then we decided to have kids who have postal addresses so that we don’t have problems while shooting the film and narrowed down on five of them," says Director, Irfan Kamal.
And its not just his main child actor who sports the rather unusual name of Municipality Ghatkopar - his friends are also interestingly named - Soda, Sursuri, Cutting and Dhed-Shaana all based on Mumbai lingo.
Thanks Maa which also features cameos from actors like Ranvir Shorey, Barry John, Raghuvir Yadav among others is scheduled to release across India in February next year.
