Thiruvananthapuram: Shashi Tharoor, who lost the race to the post of Secretary General of the United Nations, is now eyeing a Congress ticket to the Indian Parliament.
While the state Congress leaders are tight lipped, sources have indicated that Tharoor's chances are quite high as it seems he has managed to impress party chief Sonia Gandhi to quite an extent.
Tharoor’s presence at the Congress state conference held in Cochin is a certain indication of his aspiration. Tharoor, better known for his diplomatic and literary skills than politics, however, is not saying much.
“I think one simple rule in life is never to accept or reject a gift that you have not yet been offered. So I think I'll wait and see when the offer is made whether I say yes or no to it,” Tharoor said.
The Kerala Congress says Tharoor was just a guest speaker but there's no denying that Sonia Gandhi was impressed.
Even party workers are upbeat about a celebrity Congress nominee contesting from prestigious seats like either Thiruvananthapuram or Pallakkad. However some speculate that Tharoor could also choose Kollam.
“He's still at a faraway stage from that but the good thing is when articulate, bright, qualified persons join the party, it's a compliment first an foremost to the party,” AICC spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, said.
After Ban Ki Moon came out stronger in the UN Secretary General election, Tharoor is looking for his own political space and Kerala may finally become his destination as well.
