New Delhi: The next incumbent of Rashtrapati Bhavan can look forward to a huge bonanza of sorts. A 100 per cent salary hike is likely for the next president but the decision, which will be implemented soon, comes at a time when the battle for presidency has become ugly and vicious.
“The Cabinet has advised to work on the President, vice-president and governor’s packages. So, that it can be taken up in one go. And hopefully just on the eve of the Monsoon Session the matter will be brought to the Cabinet again,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said.
As of now, the President gets Rs 50,000 but now it’s now proposed to be hiked to a lakh. Almost everything that the president does or wants to do is taken care of by the annual Rs 22.5 crore budget that the government has for his upkeep.
Rs 7 crore is spent to keep the house and estate running while Rs 6 crore for salaries of the secretarial staff.
For the salaries of the 900-odd liveried staff, the Government has allotted Rs 2.16 crore, Rs 2 crore for the gardens and Rs 64 lakh for hospitality purposes.
Also, Rs 1.5 crore is spent for maintenance of the summer home in Shimla and an official residence in Hyderabad.
The over 200 acres of the estate has a staff of about 1,000. Then there are 25 chefs who take care of all the food requirements of the President's staff and there are two chefs that personally attend to the President.
So, now you know why contenders have been clamouring to get to the Raisina Hill.
