'The crowd is 100 per cent behind me'

Roma Khanna, CNN-IBN

Mumbai: Second seed Mario Ancic has moved into the quarter-finals of the inaugural KFA tournament in Mumbai.

But there's more to the twelfth ranked player in the world than just a booming serve and hard ground-strokes. CNN-IBN's Roma Khanna got Ancic to talk about more than just tennis.

Roma Khanna: He has been the face of the tournament, the poster boy for the KFA Tennis Open going on in Mumbai. It is also Mario Ancic’s first visit to India. Welcome to CNN-IBN Mario. How has this visit been for you so far? You have the crowds cheering for you, all of them supporting you.

Mario Ancic: Yes, I have had an unbelievable time here. The crowd is 100 per cent behind me, doesn’t matter if I’m playing singles or doubles, as I’m being partnered by Bhupathi. And yes, like you said, it’s the first time in India. I came early here, was in New Delhi. I played with the kids and then came here early to try to get used to very humid conditions here, and so far so good. I’m enjoying it a lot, the people are very nice to me and are very hospitable and I’m enjoying every moment here.

Roma Khanna: Have you ever played with the game by your name Super Mario?

Mario Ancic: I played when I was very young before I got the nickname and I think the kids are now playing it.

Roma Khanna: Lastly Mario, would you act in a movie? You said you watch movies, and you enjoy them.

Mario Ancic: Yes, I enjoy the movies. But I would love to come to India. Now with Bhupathi and Leander Paes, and Sania Mirza is growing up in tennis, so maybe we’ll see more players coming up from here.

Roma Khanna: Well Mario, it was fun talking to you and we enjoyed watching you play. We hope you do come to India more often. Thank you for speaking to us.

Mario Ancic: Thank you.
