The face behind the Pune I-T haul

Pune To Pune's racing fraternity, Hasan Ali Khan is the low proflile son-in-law of Ahmad Abbas, who finances the Abbas million trophy, one of the biggest racing tournaments in Pune.

The Abbas family have been in the horse business for three generations. Ali owns six horses, which he owns in a partnership with a man named Farid Karachiwala.

The man allegedly behind the biggest tax scam in Indian history seems to have two different personalities.

While in Pune, he was a sophisticated horse trader and a horse race regular; in Hyderabad, police suspect him of being the same man who is accused in an attempt to murder and small time cheating cases.

"We have tried to verify our records, but Hasan Al is a very common name. We've identitified three cases in which Hasan Ali figures in cheating cases and cases of white collar crimes. Whether it is the same person or the other person it will take us some time time to confirm," says says Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, Balwinder Singh.

However, Hasan Ali's lawyer, V Kakare, is confident that Hasan is far from being in trouble: "No charges framed yet against Hasan. An IT raid took place in January, I am not aware of any case agsint him in Hyderabad."

But Preliminary investigations have led the police to believe that there is a strong possibility that it is the same person.

Several cases, including attempted murder, registered in the early 1990's can be traced to an address in Hyderabad's Nimboliadda area.

While the Hyderabad police has strong reason to believe they have the right man, the Income Tax department is still trying to tie the loose ends.
