New Delhi: Kolkata-born author Kunal Basu is back on the literary scene with his recently-launched book of short stories, The Japanese Wife.
While there are 12 short stories to choose from, it's clearly the title story that seeps into your system.
In fact, you'll be seeing that story on screen very soon, with director Aparna Sen casting Rahul Bose as the title character Snehamoy.
The Japanese Wife is an old-world story - a Math teacher in Kolkata gets married, by letter, to his Japanese penfriend, who he has never met.
Yet they know each other, through their letters, and manage to convince you, the reader, of their deep attachment. It's a stark story and leaves you craving for more.
The other stories in this collection aren't all to my taste but they are like portraits in miniature and certainly contribute to the author's range.
The Grateful Ganga is interesting, Snake Charmer is somehow eerily chilling and Long Live Imelda Marcos is also not one you'll forget in a hurry, nor is Lotus-Dragon, for that matter.
So but this book if you like short stories and if you don't feel an urge to read cover-to-cover but prefer to savour some well-written pieces.
