The Koiralas: One big happy family

Maharajguny (Nepal): GPK to his political colleagues and aides, Girijababu to his supporters, 84-year-old Girija Prasad Koirala starts his day at 4 am every day.

The five-time Nepal Prime Minister's closest friend today is Sushila, his late brother BP's wife. They grew up together in the Koiralas' family home in Biratnagar. And today, they live across from each other, on the second floor of BP's home in Kathmandu.

It was Sushila who raised and educated the children of all four Koirala brothers when they were fighting for democracy.

"GP is older to me. But yes, he thinks well of me," says Sushila Koirala.

In Koirala household, each member acknowledges that Sushila has done a lot for the family. "I haven't done anything, but if that's what they say, then that's fine," says a humble Sushila Koirala.

GP's political heir and Sushila's younger son Shashank and his wife Supatra live with their uncle. They are all worried about his health.

The new Nepalese Prime Minister is a heavy smoker and is suffering from a lung infection. GP has quit cigarettes once again. And as of Thursday, they all hope that this time it's for real.

He has a very special way to wind down. "He likes to watch Hindi movies, especially action moves. He enjoys watching Amitabh Bachchan films," says Krishna Chandra Jha, GP's aide.

The joint family of Koiralas shares a four-bedroom house. GP has one room to himself and that's where he meets his political aides.

In a few days when GP will shift into the official residence of Nepal's Prime Minister, this four-bedroom Maharajgunj house will still remain his real home. After all, Koirala has been living here with his family for the past 30 years.
