Petition to Church needed for canonisation

New Delhi: Canonisation is a process used by the Church to determine whether a person is worthy of being declared a saint.

A petition is made to open the cause for this person's canonisation and a report on the candidate. is sent to the Congregation for the causes of saints in Rome.

The congregation researches the life of the candidate to make sure he or she practiced heroic virtue. The report is sent to the Pope.

If he accepts the report the servant of God is termed Venerable.

A miracle is required for the process to continue to the next step known as Beatification.

The venerable candidate is then beatified by the Pope and given the title Blessed.

A second miracle is required for the process to continue to the next step known as Canonisation.
