Gowda withdraws support leaving BJP in lurch

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Former prime minister, H D Deve Gowda backtracks yet again, proving that when it comes to oppurtunistic politics, the humble farmer is right at the top.

Gowda's 'me and my family' approach rode roughshod over the likes of Ramakrishna Hegde, S R Bommai and Veerendra Patil in Karnataka politics.

When his son H D Kumaraswamy allied with the BJP in January 2006 to form the government, Gowda tried to give the impression of distancing himself from the move, proclaiming his secular credentials.

"In these circumstances, it is not defeat or fear on my part to continue as the national president of the party. Hence I am hereby tendering my resignation," Gowda had said then.

But then for Gowda family always came first. The BJP realised to their cost 20 months later when the time came to transfer power. Kumaraswamy refused, leaving the BJP shell-shocked.

"Now, the BJP has realised what suffering is, what I have been through in the last 20 months," Gowda said after the JD(S) withdrew support.

However, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha said that the issue was not just of power transfer, it was of betrayal.

However, with disgruntled JD(S) mla's pulling in different directions, Kumaraswamy had no choice but to return to the BJP. But, Deve Gowda, keenly scrutinising everything from the sidelines, made no effort to hide his reluctance and displeasure.

Even as the BJP celebrated the advent of their first-ever chief minister in the south, Gowda was busy planning the ultimate master stroke.

Not once did he pledge full support to the BJP. Instead, he insisted that the BJP sign a 12-point memorandum before the floor test and when the BJP refused, the JD(S) simply withdrew support.

The JD(S) supremo has once again made it clear that for staying in power, the BJP has to be forever ready to dance to his tunes.
