The numbers say it: China looms over India

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: India may have put behind the 1962 war with China and offered it a relationship of trust but it has a long way to go before it matches up with its neigbour.

China ranks third among India's top trading partners but it has greater economic prowess.

The Chinese economy, growing at an average 9 per cent, is now worth $2.7 trillion. India’s economy lags behind at $906 billion.

India also trails in the race for foreign direct investments. FDIs to India increased sharply from $7 billion during 2005-06 to $19.5 billion during 2006-07 but it was overshadowed by the $63 billion FDI flow into China in 2006-07.

Another concern for India has been the jet-speed infrastructure development in China. Their preparation for the Olympics in August has been applauded even by our visiting PM..

This apart, China's defence expenditure also outnumbers that of India. With the world's largest army, China spends approximately $30 billion on it's defence compared to $20 billion by India.

China's close proximity to Pakistan has been another thorn in the Sino-Indian relations. But with Chinese Premier Hu Jintao visiting India last year and Indian PM's visit to China the relations between the two nations seems to be on an upswing.
