New Delhi: From being a face that dominated hoardings and commercials in Bangladesh to being branded a terrorist - Tariq Dar's ordeal began when he was arrested by the Bangladesh police in Dhaka for traveling with forged documents in 2006.
"I am innocent. I was tortured there for being a RAW agent, I'm being tortured here for being a terrorist," Dar said when he was being taken to Delhi’s Tihar jail three months ago.
The Kashmiri model, arrested on September 16 2006, was deported to India on charges of being an agent of the Research and Analysis Wing.
When he landed in Delhi, Tariq was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police for alleged links with the terror outfit Lashker-e-Toiba.
These allegations were repeatedly denied by Tariq. "You can investigate my credentials. We are not those kind of people," Dar said.
But the Delhi Police claimed they had very strong reasons for the arrest.
"We don’t pick up people just like that. We arrest people based on specific inputs from intelligence agencies and technical analysis,” said Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police Special Cell, Alok Kumar.
Despite this claim, the police have so far not been able to gather enough evidence to file a chargesheet and Tariq Dar was absolved of all charges by the Tis Hazari Court on Wednesday after the Delhi Police failed to file a chargesheet against him, reportedly due to lack of evidence.
