New Delhi: He is not sixth time lucky. BS Yeddyurappa, who survived five major attacks on his chair in the last 38 months, has now been dumped by his own party. The way ahead looks tough for the man who brought BJP to power in a southern state for the first time.
He has been a great survivor all through his four-decade long political career.
But Yeddyurappa's beginnings could not have been more humble. He began life as a rice mill clerk in Shimoga district in the 1960s.
He has risen through the ranks - first as a local municipality member, the lone BJP MLA in the entire South India and finally Leader of the Opposition in Karnataka in 1994.
The biggest turn in his life came in 2006 - HD Deve Gowda's son HD Kumaraswamy and Yeddyurappa rode to Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power in Karnataka. JDS-BJP's 20-20 month experiment failed and Yeddyurappa was dumped by Gowda after just seven days in the office of Chief Minister in 2007.
Yeddyurappa fully exploited this betrayal and led BJP to a remarkable victory in 2008 Assembly polls.
Yeddyurappa's 38-month rule was full of ups and downs. He won every election for the party including 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
But, his administration was marred by allegations of scams, internal squabbling, never ending fight with Reddy brothers of Bellary and high handedness of his family.
The man who single-handedly built the BJP in Karnataka over 30 years is today a fallen hero but could well rise phoenix-like from the ashes.
