The Simpsons turn 400, all animated

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Simpsons has become the longest-running comedy on prime-time television. The venerable animated series celebrated a major milestone in Los Angeles on Tuesday the premiere of the show's 400th episode.

The crew behind the series looks into the future.

“I think over the years, the animators will come and say this. David, who is directing the film will come with a sketch pad and as we were doing the table read, I went ‘you gotta be kidding, it’s impossible’ (Bart’s lines) and the next thing you know is that he had animated it!,” says Voice of Bart Simpson Nancy Cartwright.

The series which has been on for a record 18 years, also features the lovable Indian shopkeeper Apu, voiced by actor Hank Azaria.

“I wish I had his career. He lives a much better life than I do, although he has eight kids,” says Azaria.

Consistently recognised as one of the most well written, subversively humorous and witty show on TV, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening lets us in on the secret of the show's success.

“It’s trying to continually surprise ourselves. That’s our secret. We want to continue to surprise ourselves and the audience,” he says.

And adding to the cheer is the long-awaited feature film The Simpsons which opens across the U S on July 27, 2007.
