Thieves seek 'chor' baba's blessings for luck, loot

Patna: Most people say a silent prayer before heading to work everyday, but at a tomb in Patna, the prayers are likely to be slightly unusual.

The tomb is called the Chor Baba ka Mazzar and all the men who go there to pray are certainly up to no good.

Says one of the thieves who goes to Chor Baba ka Mazzar, "We are here to seek Nuri Baba's blessings. He was a true thief. We ask him to bless us, and make our work rewarding."

Says the cleric who sits at the Mazzar, Ishlamuddin, "There was a king, and Nuri Baba had stolen from his court. So he's called the Baba of thieves."

Deserted during the day, the tomb is filled every night. Almost nobody from the neighborhood visits, and its maintenance is funded entirely by the faithful -- men who presumably believe that God helps those who help themselves.

Residents reaffirm that only thieves visit the mosque. And while the police admit that they keep a close watch on the tomb, nobody has ever been picked up from these premises.

Says a Police Inspector, Dinesh Prasad, "It used to be called Chor Baba ka Mazaar a long time ago. Ever since I was appointed, there's been a special force posted here. We haven't received any reports of any crime."

The Chor Baba ka Mazzar might appear to be a minor monument, but for those who truly believe, it's clearly the best place to pray for a little luck and a lot of loot.
