Thin is finally out, say the 'mannequins'

Mumbai: It doesn’t matter now how fat or thin you are because thin is finally out—even the mannequins are getting fat and real.

In India for instance, many women may not look as sensual as Bipasha Basu, but with her vital statistics recently revealed as an oomphy 36-28-36, it seems there is still hope for women who are comfortable in plus size clothes.

And if thin is really out then why should mannequins in clothes store look any different?

After years of the androgynous anorexic look, often called French ideal, fashion today the world over, is about real people and with real dimensions so mannequins too are changing sizes.

“See this mannequin, for instance, its heavier, more full, but that's the way our customers are. When they come to the store, they want to see images that fit them. It is not about the hollowed, anorexic, hungry look anymore,” says owner, Kimaya fashion store, Pradeep Hirani.

Last year, Spain and Italy banned models with a body mass index below XXX from the runways after persistent complaints that the industry was promoting killer diseases like anorexia and bulimia by promoting under-weight models.

And what this really means is the democratisation of fashion. Everyone, not matter what their dimensions, can wear stylish clothes now.

And that, in fashion terms, is nothing less than a revolution.
