New Delhi: Shibu Soren was sworn in as Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the third time on Wednesday. While Soren’s party, the Jharkhand Mukhti Morcha (JMM) celebrated his accession to the Jharkhand throne, the family of Sashinath, the man who was allegedly murdered by Soren, was furious
For the family members of Shashinath Jha, the wait for justice seems to have got a little longer. Shibu Soren may have been sworn in as CM for the third time in Jharkhand, but the ghost of his personal secretary's murder case is unlikely to leave him anytime soon.
In 2006, a CBI special court convicted the JMM leader for murdering Jha. The next year, the Delhi High Court acquitted Soren in the same case. It was this murder case in particular which had incensed the BJP leadership during that time period. Soren was a prime target of the party's campaign against UPA inducting tainted ministers.
Now the BJP may be supporting the same tainted Shibu Soren's bid to power, even joining his government with the state BJP president Raghuvar Das being sworn in as the Deputy CM, but it’s clear that the party is not united in this decision. Wednesday’s swearing being boycotted by the entire top leadership of the party was reflective of that unease.
Will Shibu Soren be third time lucky? The Supreme Court will take a view on his acquittal in the Shashinath Jha case in March and it's then that his political fate will be decided.
