Mumbai: A year after the 7/11 blasts brought Mumbai to a standstill, the Government Railway Police (GRP) is trying out an explosives detector which may help prevent bombs being taken onto trains.

Mounted high above the display screens at Churchgate station, the little black boxes have been installed in the hope that they will help detect bombs being brought into the station.

"It will solve a lot of problems for us. If somehow the explosives can be detected by that method, it will be very useful," says Commissioner, GRP, A K Sharma.

The device, reportedly capable of detecting up to 36,000 chemicals from a 200-metre distance, is connected to and LCD screen and is controlled by a switch board installed in a suitcase.

But the Western Railways isn't very impressed.

"What technology is he adopting, what ways he is doing it – nothing has been told to us. But obviously, we expect he finishes things fast or at least give us a plan," says PRO of Western Railways, Pranay Prabhakar.

The Western Railways has tried several experiments to secure Mumbai's lifeline including an airport-style metal detector and X-Ray combination. But that failed within 10 minutes of being implemented in November last year.

And now the GRP is hoping that this device will be the answer to their problems. "If the device proves its utility, then we may make it permanent,” says Sharma.
