Lucknow: The UP police, which has earned a dubious reputation for failing to curb the rising crime, is now offering a ‘Deepawali Dhamaka’.

You can SMS a simple message to them about a crime or criminal and you could be richer by Rs 500 to 10,000.

“We have prepared this plan to so that if people give us information of the criminal they can win Diwali prizes,” says DGP, Uttar Pradesh, Vikam Singh.

The message could be anything from cases of eve teasing and auto-theft to vital information about gangsters. And more important the information, the higher will be the reward.

And while UP police might have only enough funds to keep this scheme going for six months, the public seems happy.

“The scheme is good,” says a resident.

“This is a good scheme. We must support the police,” adds another resident.

So whether it is an image building or serious efforts to curb crime, the UP police have already received 15 SMSs so far.

While it remains to be seen how effective this initiative will be for the moment the DGP and his team are trying hard shape up the hard way so that they can battle crime.
