4,500 & typing: A record in letter writing

New Delhi: Even as you read his story, Subhash Chandra Agarwal is setting a new world record, which is breaking his own record for writing the maximum number of letters to editors. He has gone past 4,500 and is still typing!

“It has become a passion to fight all that is wrong and write about it,” Agarwal said.

“Public money is being squandered because of corruption. So I highlight it and till the time I don’t write to papers I feel I haven’t done my duty” he added.

Agarwal wrote his first letter in 1967 to complain about a bus conductor. The next day the conductor was at his doorstep to apologise. Agarwal soon realised that he had found his calling.

For five hours everyday he sifts through newspapers and weeklies and writes to the high and mighty.

For Agarwal, the record certificate on the wall and bundles of letters are more than just tokens of pride. They represent the power to question, to demand answers and to make a difference.

“I proposed that Rs 5 notes be converted to coins. I have also written to private firms and requested them that if their parent companies can have certain products abroad then it can be implemented in India too. Such was the case in water proof band aids,” Agarwal said.

His wife Madhu is also in the Guinness Book of World Records. She wrote 447 letters to newspapers in 2004, the most by anyone in a single year.

“This writing does not interfere with our daily lives. We always discuss such things so it is nothing out of the ordinary to write such letters,” Madhu Agarwal said.
