But as a Ganpati temple and mosque in Akola's Hirpur village share a common wall, with Ramzan and Ganesh Chaturthi falling in the same month, devotees from both communities have decided to celebrate together.
“The masjid and temple have a common wall. We have prayers at the same time, “ said a Muslim devotee,” Imranuddin Maulana.
Both the temple and the mosque have existed as symbols of religious harmony for over 100 years. And the locals take immense pride in it.
“Hindus and Muslims live together like brothers,” said a Hindu devotee Pravin Thage.
Ganesh Chaturthi used to be a personal and private affair once but it was freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak who made it a public event.
The people of Hirpur are leaving no stone unturned to keep the secular colour to the occasion as bright as possible.
