Hyderbad: The nine-day festivity at Thirupathi is a test of organisational skills for the temple authorities. But they have no reason to worry because thousands of devotees like Shidhal are willing to double up as volunteer.
Shridhal is a Chennai-based banker. Every year he travels all the way to Thirupathi for the nine-day Brahmotsav celebrations, a time when Thirupathi is teeming with thousands of devotees.
And Shridhal's visits are not just to offer his prayers but to offer his services as well. He does community service in form of serving meals and acting as a guide to other devotees.
With more than one lakh devotees streaming in daily, the temple authorities have to rely on the likes of Shridhal to manage the rush, like they say, it's all about giving.
“I get mental satisfaction while help in serving free meals,” says Shridhal.
Like Shridhal, more than a thousand boy scouts and girl guides from other neighbouring states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have volunteered to help wearing saffron, blue and red scarves.
It's a firm belief amongst the devotees that offering free service at the Thirupathi temple is like serving Lord Balaji himself. Many also believe that seva is a must for their prayers to bear fruit.
